The Thing Itself

Photography, by its very nature, is unique in the visual arts. The camera shows us all too easily the thing itself rather than a personal vision of the individual wielding the tool. It is by far the easiest and most ubiquitous device to use and therefore it’s power is often diminished. A skilled photographer, however,  can show us something so much more than the thing itself-the world of the mind, of thoughts and of memory. Creating work that is deeper and more complete than what is represented takes time and dedication to the craft of photography and a desire to understand yourself and the world around you. The ability to use the physical attributes of a photograph to speak of the intangible aspects of life is a gift and a responsibility, one that I find ceaselessly fascinating.

Original Post August 6, 2008

This blog has been a long time in the making. Having just finished graduate school and my tenth year of teaching, I have realized that if I don’t put my thoughts somewhere then it is rather pointless to have any at all. My intent for this blog is to share the fleeting inspiration that accompanies periods of intense study and focus on the craft I have chosen. While I am primarily a photographer and teacher and my posts are going to be dealing with these areas, I welcome anyone with an interest in exploring creativity to read and comment.

As it is with most creative things, posts may be nothing more than a sentence or two, or they may be long winded rambling tirades. They may be pieces of previous papers I have written for my MFA or fragments of conversations. Nothing is off limits.

Heres to a fruitful and rewarding life. Cheers.
